Titel und Abstract des Dissertationsprojektes
Dramatic Adaptations in British Romanticism
In my doctoral thesis, I examine plays of the Romantic period as adaptations by comparing them to their source texts and thus tracing their production process. In order to shed light on the complexity of influencing factors and mechanisms at work in the process of adaptation, as well as the plurality of forms of adaptations around the turn to the 19th century, I distinguish between different types of boundaries that can be crossed by an adaptation. Broadly speaking, I distinguish between adaptations of earlier English plays (temporal distance), adaptations of source texts from other cultures (cultural distance) and dramatic adaptations of non-dramatic source texts (genre-specific conventions and affordances). Self-evidently, these three types of adaptations can interact, as in a drama which is an adaptation of an old prose text from a foreign culture. To illustrate the differences between these boundary-crossings, as well as their interaction, my dissertation will consist of four chapters, each with a different focus: English adaptations of Shakespearean plays, of Gothic novels, of plays by the popular German dramatist August von Kotzebue and dramatic renditions of tales from the Arabian Nights.
