Biografie

KURZBIOGRAPHIE

Philip Steinberg studied Business and Management at the University of Mannheim, specializing in International Strategic Management, Industrial Management, and Anglo-American Studies. He completed his studies at the chair of Professor Al-Laham in 2012 with a diploma thesis on „The diffusion of innovation in networks: Analysis of diffusion measures and rates as well as cultural influence on the network formation and structure”.
During an international research visit, he successfully participated in courses of the MBA program for International Management at the Hawaii Pacific University in 2009. Before, he had also gained international experiences during an exchange year in Albany, New York in 2002/03. His professional career includes part-time employment and internships at the German carmaker AUDI, the Douglas Holding, a large service retailing group, the Innovation Institute in Frankfurt, and the Bültmann Group. In April 2013 he joined the team of the Jackstaedt Center as research assistant.

Current Paper: Governance Models of R&D Offshoring: Innovation Performance and the moderating role of Absorptive Capacity (with Vivien Procher and Diemo Urbig)

Abstract:
The globalization of business functions has led to an increase in offshoring of R&D. Firms’ offshoring models of R&D include captive offshoring (foreign R&D spending to affiliates) and offshore outsourcing (foreign R&D spending to external partners). For 2,421 R&D-active German enterprises we examine how captive offshoring and offshore outsourcing affect their innovation performance during 2005-2011. Based on transaction cost economics we predict qualitatively different effects on innovation performance for the two distinct governance models of R&D offshoring. We find a U-shaped relationship between captive offshoring and innovation performance, but an inverse U-shaped relationship between offshore outsourcing and innovation performance. Furthermore, we find that absorptive capacity amplifies the performance-benefits of R&D offshoring in the case of both governance models.
