Renewal of registration for doctorate

Semester and tuition fees

Doctoral students are exempted from UW tuition fee, but they must pay the Semester fee on initial registration and on renewal of registration for each subsequent semester.

Renewal of registration dates can be found here (in German only). Click here for information about the NRW Semester ticket.

Renewal of registration after the 8th semester

In line with § 4 section 2 of UW's current Enrollment Regulations (dated 03.05.2012) (in German) doctoral students can remain registered until the end of the semester in which they are awarded their doctorate, for a maximum period of 8 semesters.

In exceptional cases a prolongation of up to 4 semesters is possible, on condition that the student present to the Student Administration Office, within the deadline for renewal of registration, written confirmation from their supervisor of the need for prolongation (see download form below).

The CGS offers a form for the immatriculation of doctoral students after 8 semesters.

Prolongation beyond a period of 12 semesters requires presentation to the Student Administration Office at each renewal of registration of written confirmation from the doctoral degree examinations board confirming the need for prolongation (see download form below). Renewal deadlines must be observed.

The CGS offers a form for the immatriculation of doctoral students after 12 semesters.

International doctoral students whose first degree was issued by a university in their home country have to submit the statement of the relevant supervisor up to the 8th semester and additionally, the statement of the doctoral degree examination board (in German "Promotionsausschuss") from the 12th semester onward  to the UW`s International Office.
