Jana Schmutzler studied business administration at the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, receiving her degree as Diplom-Kauffrau in 2002. After that she worked as a consultant and in the middle management in Germany, the United States, Mexico and Colombia in the area of strategic management and marketing. From 2010 to 2012 Jana completed the course work of the PhD Program in Business Administration at the Universidad de los Andes in Bogota, Colombia. From August 2012, she works an external PhD student under the supervision of Prof. Bönte at her PhD thesis at the University of Wuppertal.

The contingent effect of regional social capital on the effectiveness of external information sources for innovation: A developing country perspective
Supervisor: Prof. Bönte (Wuppertal)

The objective of this research is to analyze the influence of a potential contingency on the effective use of external innovation sources regarding firm-level innovation performance. Combining insights from the institutional theory, social capital theory, the relational view and transaction cost theory, I posit that regionally bound social capital positively influences the use and appropriation of external knowledge leading to a better innovation output.
